Sherry Melton, MD

Sherry M. Melton, MD, specializes in acute care surgery - trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. With over 25 years of experience as a clinician and administrative leader, she provides emergency surgical care for patients with traumatic injuries, critical illnesses and acute surgical conditions requiring immediate intervention.

Dr. Melton earned her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She completed a general surgery residency at West Virginia University, followed by fellowship training in trauma and surgical critical care at the University of Tennessee. She later earned a Master of Science in Health Administration from the University of Alabama, enhancing her capabilities in healthcare leadership and operations.

Dr. Melton is board-certified in both surgery and surgical critical care. As a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, she has demonstrated a commitment to the highest standards of surgical practice and ethics. She is a member of multiple acute care surgery organizations including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) where she sponsored her former residents in a poster presentation September 2025.  "Robotic-Assisted Surgery (RAS) is Safe and Effective in Select Trauma Patients in a Safety Net Hospital" is now being prepared as a manuscript.

She holds additional fellowships with the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Dr. Melton has been recognized for her contributions to trauma policy, research and education. and for rapidly developing a robotic-assisted surgery program for acute care. Dr. Melton is proud of her recent accomplishment of developing a robust robotic assisted acute care surgery program over a two-year period.
