Shaun William McLaughlin, MD

Shaun W. McLaughlin, MD, is a board-certified diagnostic and interventional radiologist/oncologist who uses radiology and imaging technology to perform minimally invasive surgery. He specializes in ablation to treat primary cancers and metastatic disease in the lung, liver and kidneys. He also performs catheter-based treatments to deliver chemotherapy and radiation therapy directly to tumors using the tumor’s blood supply.
“Interventional oncology is considered the fourth pillar of multidisciplinary cancer care along with surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology,” Dr. McLaughlin explains. “We’re involved with patient care from the second they walk in for their biopsies. We place chest ports for chemotherapy and work closely with our surgical and oncology colleagues to manage a broad spectrum of complications, including bleeding, pulmonary embolisms, IVC filter placements, drains, pain management and palliative care.”
The ability to relieve suffering is what Dr. McLaughlin loves most about his work, and he says treating patients and counseling families at all hours of the day and night — especially during their most vulnerable moments — leaves him truly humbled. 
In 2024, Dr. McLaughlin was honored with the Red Carnation Award at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, acknowledging his dedication to clinical excellence and the meaningful impact he has on patients, colleagues and the organization.
Dr. McLaughlin was born in Wilkes-Barre and grew up in northeastern Pennsylvania. After earning his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completing his residency and fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he returned to NEPA with his wife and children to practice medicine.
