Ryan A Hoffman, MD

Dr. Ryan A. Hoffman is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder & elbow reconstruction. He sees patients at our Woodbine, GMC, Sellinsgrove, and Bloomsburg locations.

He grew up in the Philadelphia area, attending medical school at Drexel University. In medical school, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and earned numerous awards for scholastic and clinical achievement. Afterwards, Dr. Hoffman remained in Philadelphia to complete orthopedic residency training at Einstein Healthcare Network. There, he was elected Administrative Chief resident and was the winner of the 22nd annual John R. Gregg Memorial Resident Bowl awarded by the Philadelphia Orthopedic Society. He then travelled to Providence, Rhode Island to complete a shoulder & elbow fellowship at Brown University. This fellowship enables Dr. Hoffman to gain vast experience in the clinical and surgical treatment of shoulder and elbow surgery.

During fellowship, Dr. Hoffman developed additional interest in complex reconstructive shoulder and elbow conditions and sought additional experience and training in these areas. He subsequently completed two traveling fellowships at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, and the Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre, Ontario, Canada. This additional training provided Dr. Hoffman advanced skill in all aspects of the shoulder and elbow, from complex fracture dislocations, elbow arthroscopy, and advanced procedures including replacements and interposition arthroplasty.

After being in practice for a few years, Dr. Hoffman joined Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute in 2026. He continues to use evidence-based practices with the latest medical research and cutting-edge treatments to provide his patients with the best possible care.  Dr. Hoffman’s skill set allows him to treat a wide array of patients and conditions, including shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, upper extremity fractures, primary and revision rotator cuff repairs with and without biologic augmentation, tendon transfers for the shoulder, joint salvage, joint preservation, primary and revision shoulder and elbow replacements, and sports injuries of the shoulder and elbow.

Dr. Hoffman is a former shoulder surgery patient himself. This experience led him to provide an individualized approach centered on his patients. He works with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan, taking their preferences and needs into account.

In addition to his day-to-day medical practice, Dr. Hoffman is an accomplished researcher with numerous published book chapters and peer reviewed manuscripts in shoulder and elbow surgery. He has had several presentations and lectures on regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Hoffman is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, Arthroscopic Association of North America, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also an editor for several medical journals, including Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery and Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research. Dr. Hoffman enjoys teaching and serves as an educator for the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute Orthopedic Surgery residency program and as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic surgery at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.

As an elite collegiate wrestler, Dr. Hoffman competed in multiple national tournaments and medaled in the Junior Olympic Games. As a result, Dr. Hoffman is uniquely situated to understand the needs of the competitive athlete and difficulties they can encounter. He is currently a team physician with USA Wrestling. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, snowboarding, working out, and spending time with family and friends.
