About Matthew Gregory Fanelli

Matthew Fanelli, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine. He treats a variety of hip, shoulder and knee conditions. Dr. Fanelli’s focus is on improving his patients’ quality of life. “My goal is getting people back to doing what they love — that motivates me to come to work every day,” he says.
Dr. Fanelli earned his medical degree from The Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey. After medical school, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where he served as chief resident. He followed that with a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the Mississippi Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, Miss. He credits his father, Geisinger sports medicine surgeon Gregory Fanelli, MD, for inspiring him to pursue a career in medicine. And because his wife Tina is an orthodontist, he jokes that “‘ortho is a family affair.”
He’s an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Pennsylvania Ortho Society.
Dr. Fanelli is an accomplished researcher and presenter. He’s published numerous journal articles, book chapters and abstracts, and presented at conferences around the country. He serves as an assistant professor at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.
A native of Danville, Dr. Fanelli wanted to return to the area for orthopaedic surgery practice.
In his spare time, he enjoys running, hiking and spending time with his family.

    Prior to having the procedure, it would have been helpful to have the procedure explained more as well as what would be normal in terms of recovery. I understand that everybody is different, but having a general understanding would have made my recovery a much better experience.

    I was very disappointed. I feel because I appear I. Good health because I take care of myself and try to manage my symptoms the best I can, my concerns were over looked. I was sent home with physical therapy exercises. I reported to the dr that PT discharged me because they felt something more was going on. I felt unheard and frustrated
